Volkswagen is an auto company after our van-loving hearts; sure, typical, everyday vans aren’t the coolest things in the world, but VW has been churning out a steady stream of awesome hauler variants—conceptual or otherwise—that really get us going. Now, the automaker has unveiled its latest van-based creation, the Volkswagen Tristar concept, at the IAA commercial-vehicle conference in Hannover, and it looks nothing like a van at all.


Compared to the camper’s dream Multitrack concept and the recently available (for Europeans only) new/old Type 2 Microbus, the Tristar has both a stronger affinity for capitalization and forays off the beaten path. The concept started life as a short-wheelbase Volkswagen Transporter van, but the rear portion of the roof has been cut away, leaving a deep but stubby pickup bed in its stead. Besides sporting an ultra-bad-ass full-size spare-tire mount, the bed also features a sealed “trunk” compartment similar to that in Honda’s now-defunct Ridgeline pickup.

The Transporter’s front end was toughened for Tristar duty, and knobby tires and plenty of black plastic body cladding complete the look. For more off-road prowess, VW fitted the truck with 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a locking rear axle and raised the suspension 1.2 inches. A 2.o-liter four-cylinder TDI diesel making 201 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque is mated to VW’s familiar seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, a combo that’s good for a 115-mph top speed and a zero-to-62-mph run in 10 seconds, according to VW.

We absolutely want a Tristar, and not the least because it resembles a classic Microbus pickup that spent some time in Tennessee and baked in a future oven for a while. Come to think of it, were this truck to lose its chintzy concept-car stuff (a video-conferencing flat-screen and a built-in espresso machine), we think it would make an excellent VW-made pickup for the U.S. market. It could even be built in Tennessee, alongside the Passat and Volkswagen’s upcoming three-row crossover.

Volkswagen Transporter has today confirmed the sixth-generation version of its Transporter van, via the sketch you see above. It may be pictured here with windows and extra rows of seats, but we’ll be the first to admit it looks, well, rather vanny.


That didn’t stop a small wave of excitement rippling through the TG.com office when the picture dropped, though. See, we all have experiences of VW’s van, whose five generations span 65 years. Only the Landie Defender can rival such longevity.

There have been myriad versions of VW’s T-series, and all manner of options, including a 4Motion all-wheel drive option in recent years. But the three best-known flavours are the minibus (more recently called Caravelle), the campervan (or California) and the good old panel van.


Most iconic are the early, rear-engined generations, the T1 kicking production off in 1950 and now seen as particularly iconic (and scarily valuable) in 21-window Microbus form. You’ll need BMW M4 money for the best ones out there…


The similarly styled T2 took over in 1967, and while the more angularly styled T3 arrived in 1979 to officially replace it, T2 production continued in South American countries, and only ceased in Brazil at the end of 2013. Some new-old T2s can even be found knocking about on UK shores, where they’re sold as a more affordable alternative to the unstoppably appreciating classic campers.


The T4 introduced the current Transporter’s shape in the early 1990s, the T5 and now T6 continuing its silhouette with updated styling flourishes. As in the car industry, an evolutionary approach to model replacement is testament to some fairly enviable heritage. Think Porsche 911 or Mini. And that heritage is something VW’s van - the bestselling light commercial vehicle of the lot - has in spades.

So here’s a gratuitous delve into the family album. Scroll above to skim through the five previous generations of Transporter in all manner of flavours, and tell us which one of the lot you like the best below…


A UK price of £19,250 (about $31,540) for the Volkswagen e-Up!  has just been announced, and my second video from my second test drive of the Volkswagen e-Up! is nearly published, so I think now is a good time to write up my full review of Volkswagen’s first 100% electric car.


I’ll lift a bit from my Nissan Leaf–Volkswagen e-Up!–BMW i3 comparison in the “Driving The Volkswagen e-Up!” section, but the rest is new.

One-Line Volkswagen e-Up! Review

The Volkswagen e-Up! is a quality electric vehicle with a lot of freedom in the regenerative braking realm, great pickup, a comfortable interior, and a very smooth ride.

The VW e-Up!, only available in Europe at the moment, drives very similar to the Nissan Leaf. After two short test drives of each, I can’t say that I noticed much of a difference between the two in the driving quality.


The interior of the e-Up! was a bit simpler than that of the Leaf. It certainly wasn’t at the level of the BMW i3 (which costs about 150% what the e-Up! costs), but it was comfortable. Similar to the Leaf, the dashboard area also had some interesting visualizations and charge/range information, but it was all a bit simpler than what the Leaf offered. There also seemed to be a bit less space in the front as well as the back seats, but I’d really have to spend a little more time with the cars to see if I really noticed that in day-to-day use.
Some of the plastics in the interior struck me as seeming a bit “cheap.” But this is the case in many cars nowadays.

I think the e-Up! looks very sharp on the outside. That struck me right away when I saw several getting ready for test rides around Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf the day before EXPOtest Electric kicked off. It’s no Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric, but I think it looks great and gets people’s heads to turn. (Given how subjective such matters are, though, I do await strong disagreement from some of you.)


One very unique thing about the eUp! is the number of braking modes it has. It has 4 regenerative braking options (compared to the Leaf’s 2 to 3 and the BMW i3′s one) — Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level B. It’s very nice to have so much variation here. In my second test drive of the vehicle, I started getting used to the various options a bit, and I definitely appreciated having a lot of options and freedom there for different driving situations and preferences. You can check out my reaction and the reaction of another test driver I filmed in the two videos below. As you can see in the second one, the various braking options are especially nice to have when descending hills with different levels of steepness.
In addition to the multiple braking options, the VW e-Up! has three driving modes — normal, eco, and eco plus. As you’d expect, each step along that path reduces power used by the car.


As with nearly every electric car I’ve driven, the VW e-Up! is extremely smooth to drive, the car accelerates quickly but quietly, there is a low center of gravity thanks to the batteries in the bottom-center of the vehicle, and the overall quality of the drive beats the heck out of any gasmobile I remember driving.
As noted above, the base price of the VW e-Up! in the UK is £24,250 (about $39,730) before the £5,000 UK electric vehicle grant of. In Germany, it sells for €26,900 (about $36,510), but Germany doesn’t have an electric vehicle grant or tax rebate. There’s no word yet on how much the e-Up! will sell for in the US.

For comparison, $39,000 is at the higher end of the US price spectrum for electric cars (but we can’t assume the e-Up! is going to sell for $39,000 in the US):

Volkswagen adds windows and rear seats to its Caddy van to produce a practical five or seven seater, the Caddy Life. How does it compare with car-based rivals on UK roads? 


Those of you looking for an MPV are spoilt for choice at the moment. Just take a look at the Volkswagen line-up alone - there are four different models to choose from. The Caddy Life is the latest MPV from the German firm.

So why would you pick this over a VW's own Touran or Sharan? For a start, it works out significantly cheaper than either of the car-based models. It also provides a vast cargo area with a low floor to ease loading. Five seats are standard but you can add an optional third row too.

Previous Caddy based MPVs have always felt a little workmanlike and haven't had some of the safety features you’d expect from a modern family wagon. Can this fourth generation change that?



What’s the 2015 Volkswagen Caddy Life 2.0 TDI 102PS DSG like inside?

At first glance, the interior appears to be everything you’d expect from VW. There’s some well-placed chrome trim, leather trim for the steering wheel and gearlever, and a modern looking infotainment system. Look a little closer, though, and you may be disappointed.

The familiar grey plastics are all hard to the touch with no softer materials anywhere. The switches and dials also feel a little cheaper than you’d expect for the money too. It’s all solidly put together and will no doubt stand up to years of abuse but once again, it ultimately feels like the van it is.

Safety kit is a little disappointing when compared with some rivals, although there are now curtain airbags for front and rear seat passengers and city braking is standard. It's a shame that other safety features such as lane keeping assist aren’t available as an option.


Still, look behind to the rear seats and the Caddy Life plays its ace. There’s decent leg and head room for rear seat passengers while a third row of seats is a reasonable £546 option. The rear seats can also fold flat, fold forward for tall loads or be removed altogether.

With just the front seats in place, load space is a huge 3030 litres. Helping practicality further is a low floor that is completely flat, which makes loading heavy items much easier.



What’s the 2015 Volkswagen Caddy Life 2.0 TDI 102PS DSG like to drive?

Despite having a 2.0-litre diesel under the bonnet, this particular variant has just 101bhp. Even without a load, it has a 13sec 0-62mph time. This isn’t an issue if you’re pottering around town, but the motor can feel strained accelerating and maintaining motorway speeds.

Not only does it struggle to get up to speed, it becomes very noisy. The engine settles into the background hum at a cruise, but the diesel drone never fully goes away.

Not helping refinement is the dual-clutch automatic gearbox which can be quite jerky at lower speeds and an engine stop-start system which is noisy in operation. At least the steering is well weighted and acceptably precise.

However,  ride comfort on the 16in steel wheels is better than many cars out there. As the Caddy Life doesn’t even attempt to be sporty, there’s a softness to the ride that is very appealing. True, at times this can give a slightly floaty feeling while there is some bounce from the back end, but it's never uncomfortable. 



Should I buy one?

The Caddy Life does little to hide its commercial roots and may feel a little rough around the edges if you’ve come from a car-based MPV. However, it's a genuinely practical proposition should you need to carry large loads regularly, the trouble is that there’s a lot going against it.

Refinement and interior quality are poor when compared with car-based rivals and this 2.0-lite diesel has fairly high CO2 emissions of 133g/km with the automatic gearbox, dropping to 122g/km with the manual gearbox. Claimed official fuel economy is a similarly unremarkable 55.4mpg (61.4mpg with a manual).

Furthermore, we could forgive the Caddy Life plenty if it was cheap but, unfortunately, it isn’t. Opt for the auto gearbox and you’re looking at spending more than £21,000. Even with a manual, you won’t get much change from £20,000. At that price, we’d look elsewhere unless you desperately need the carrying capacity.

Volkswagen has revealed a general timeline of the diesel crisis ahead of the release of an internal investigation into the matter, shedding light for the first time on the events leading up to the Sept. 20, 2015 admission that the company had created emissions-cheating software for 2.0-liter diesel models in the U.S.


The automaker says that Dr. Martin Winterkorn, the CEO at the time, received a memo regarding the U.S. study on May 23, 2014 as part of his weekend mail, but the automaker is not sure if he had read it. Dr. Winterkorn received a second memo months later.

"On 14 November 2014, Mr. Winterkorn received another memo that reported, amongst other things, on several then current product defect cases and referred to a cost framework of approx. EUR 20 million for the diesel issue in http://motocar-news.com/category/car-reviews/North America," VW states.


The automaker now concedes that the issue of emissions discrepancies was not given due attention at the time, but it does not say whether the 20 million euro figure was cited as part of a recall or monetary fine calculation that VW expected itself to devote to the problem.


Since VW has not reproduced the actual memo, it is not clear just how many vehicles it expected to be affected or what measures it contemplated at the time.

"According to current knowledge, the diesel matter, as it was treated as one of many product issues facing the Company, did not initially receive particular attention at the management levels of Volkswagen," the automaker states. "Accordingly, the 'Committee for Product Safety' (APS) was responsible for this matter at Volkswagen."


VW points out that recalls and testing discrepancies are not out of the ordinary -- which is true -- and that discrepancies by themselves do not immediately signal an attempt by the automaker to circumvent those regulations.

"Emission deviations between test bench and road operation exist at all automobile manufacturers and are by no means automatically attributable to violations of regulations," VW says. "For global automobile manufacturers, service measures and recall campaigns are nothing out of the ordinary. Volkswagen expressly regrets that, looking back, the situation is different."

VW's statement on the matter pinpoints the summer of 2015 as the period during which it became apparent that a voluntary recall campaign would not be able to reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions in the affected TDI models. It was at this time that VW retained the law firm Kirkland & Ellis to advise it on U.S. emissions regulations and had its Committee for Product Safety create a diesel task force to address the issue.

The automaker says that during a meeting on July 27, 2015, the diesel issue was discussed "on the periphery of a regular meeting" regarding product issues in the presence of Dr. Winterkorn and Dr. Herbert Diess, but that VW does not know if the participants of that meeting understood that altered software was at the root of the discrepancies. VW states that, in August of last year, individual VW technicians gave "a full explanation" of the causes to VW's in-house legal counsel and to lawyers from Kirkland & Ellis.

"These detailed explanations led to the Management Board members' realization that the modification of the engine management software constituted a prohibited defeat device under U.S. law," VW states. "It was then decided to communicate this information transparently to CARB and EPA. This occurred during a meeting with the U.S. authorities on 3 September 2015. Mr. Winterkorn was informed accordingly in a note dated 4 September 2015."

In August of last year, VW believed that the financial toll from the use of a defeat device would not be particularly severe, relying on precedent of a $100 million fine assessed against another automaker, with the penalties amounting to $91 per vehicle.

VW now says that it was expecting to enter into negotiations with U.S regulators and initiate a recall campaign, and predicted its financial exposure to be far below the record mark of $100 million.

Its expectations would prove to be incorrect, as even during the summer of 2015 VW expected this issue to be limited to about half a million U.S. market models -- a big recall for sure, but not an unprecedented one.



In publishing this timeline, VW has also revealed that the resulting publicity from the Notice of Violation filed by the EPA was unexpected, as it was in discussions with the EPA regarding the issue and expected to settle the matter.

Interestingly enough, VW has revealed this general timeline in response to a suit filed by its shareholders against the automaker in a German district court, which accuses the company of violating disclosure obligations under capital markets law. VW's position in the lawsuit is that its management board fulfilled its disclosure obligations under the capital market laws of Germany and has released its version of the timeline of events leading up to the Sept. 20 admission in an attempt to correct the "selective and incomplete publication of documents in the media" regarding the diesel crisis.

VW's position in this suit is that a violation of the disclosure obligations hinges on its principals' knowledge of facts and assessment of stock price.

The automaker contends that it expected the matter to be limited to 500,000 vehicles prior to Sept. 20 and thereafter, and that it expected a maximum financial exposure in the low hundreds of millions of dollars. The actual financial toll of the crisis is still a matter of dispute within VW, though it is now widely expected to cost the automaker billions of dollars in recall expenses and fines
